Smart Search Workflow

Noeko’s Smart Search is designed to be both intuitive and powerful. This guide will walk you through the workflow to make the most of its conceptual search capabilities.

Noeko offers two primary ways to quickly access Smart Search:

  • Through Spotlight (Command Palette): For a universal search across your entire knowledge base, press Ctrl + K (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + K (macOS). Once the Command Palette opens, type your query. The system will intelligently display relevant Smart Search results as you type. Press Enter or Return to initiate the search. You can then use your arrow keys to navigate through the results and press Enter again to go directly to that particular idea.
  • Through the Sidebar Search Bar: To focus your search within your current context (like a specific Rabbithole or tagged view), use the dedicated search bar in the sidebar. You can quickly focus on this bar by pressing Ctrl + / (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + / (macOS). As you type your keywords, relevant results will appear dynamically below. You can then click on any displayed link to open the corresponding idea.

Smart Search thrives on natural language and conceptual queries. Keyword and text-based search is also supported, in a hybrid approach.

  • Focus on Meaning: Instead of trying to remember exact words, describe the idea or concept you’re looking for.
    • Instead of: article about productivity time management pomodoro
    • Try: techniques to improve focus and productivity
  • Use Contextual Phrases: Frame your search as a question or a problem you’re trying to solve.
    • Instead of: meeting notes marketing Q4
    • Try: summary of Q4 marketing strategy discussions
  • Combine Ideas: You can combine different ideas to narrow down your search, and Smart Search will understand the relationship.
    • Example: book on behavioral economics for product design
  • Use exact words when helpful: Noeko still supports text-based searches, so if you remember an exact phrase or title, you can search with that as well.

Smart Search doesn’t just show you exact matches; it surfaces content that is conceptually relevant.

  • Relevance Ranking: Results are ordered by how closely their underlying meaning aligns with your query, even if the exact words aren’t present.
  • Contextual Snippets: You’ll see snippets that highlight the relevant sections of your notes, helping you quickly identify the most useful information.
  • Related Ideas: Noeko may also suggest other tangentially related ideas that could provide additional context or insights.

If your initial results aren’t quite what you expected, consider these refinement strategies:

  • Be More Specific: If you get too many broad results, add more detail to your conceptual query.
  • Try Synonyms: While Smart Search understands meaning, sometimes a different phrasing can lead to new connections.
  • Leverage Tags: If you know a note is associated with a particular tag (e.g., #project-alpha), include it in your search: project management strategies #project-alpha.
  • Don’t Overthink Keywords: Trust Smart Search to understand your intent. Focus on what you mean, not how you phrased it originally.
  • Be Natural: Write your queries as if you were asking a knowledgeable assistant.
  • Iterate: Smart Search is a powerful tool for discovery. If the first attempt isn’t perfect, refine your query based on the initial results.

By following this workflow, you’ll unlock the full potential of Noeko’s Smart Search, transforming your knowledge base into an instantly accessible extension of your own mind.
